Nyeri county governor Dr. Wahome Gakuru has passed on after being involved in grisly road accident at Makenji in Murang’a County on Tuesday morning.
Dr. Gakuru was traveling to Nairobi for a talk show at Royal Media Services when his car crashed leaving him, his bodyguard and the driver injured. He was then rushed to Thika level V hospital where he was pronounced dead.
“We as Governor’s are at a loss. Dr. Gakuru was a very hardworking Governor and truly he has left a very big gap to fill,” Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru eulogized him.
His death comes after he took office over a month ago after defeating his predecessor Samuel Wamathai who took office after the former Governor Nderitu Gachagua passed away while undergoing treatment in London.
Dr. Wahome Gakuru’s body has been moved to Lee funeral home.
Meanwhile President Uhuru Kenyatta has sent his condolences to family and residences of Nyeri county who he said have been robbed of a great, a committed, visionary and tireless leader.
He assured the family of Governor Gakuru and the entire Nyeri county fraternity that the The National Government will stand with them, and will offer all the support necessary at this time.
The president also encouraged the governor’s family, friends and the entire county to take comfort in the solidarity of Kenyans, and not to lose hope during this trying moment of tragedy.
“I have learnt with profound shock of the death of the Nyeri Governor, Dr Wahome Gakuru, following a tragic road accident at Kabati. My family and I, and the National Government send our deepest condolences and sympathies to the late Governor Gakuru’s family and his Nyeri constituents,” said President Uhuru.
